In February 2012, Camp Lu-Jo Kismif was informed that the IRS had removed the Camp’s 501(c)(3) status back in January 2011. This was due to a filing error of three consecutive years of transposing two numbers in the long camp account number in its annual IRS filing. The IRS has a no tolerance mistake policy for groups with 501(c)(3) status. This unintentional filing error was immediately corrected. Work was promptly begun to restore the Camp’s 501(c)(3) status and to restore it retroactively to the time the IRS removed the status. In May 2014, the IRS finally reissued 501(c)(3) status to Camp Lu-Jo and made the status retroactive back to January 2011. This meant Camp Lu-Jo could continue to accept donations freely as a non-profit organization as it had in the past.
As a non-profit organization, the operation of Camp Lu-Jo is only partially funded by camper fees. The camp is able to continue because of generous donations from individuals, families, and churches.
